“\u015ealvar” was not the generic word for trousers! It was one of several styles of pants, and an unpopular one at that.<\/p>\n

The available definitions are predictably maddening. In a 1533 dictionary, \u015falvar are defined as \u201cchalzoni grandi oue a chammino si mettono le ueste\u201d and in 1611 as \u201cweite hosen w\u00fcr (!) frauen,\u201d wide trousers for women.<\/p>\n
