All of the communities represented were in the immediate vicinity of 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century Istanbul, so close that they have since been absorbed into the modern city of Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose one volume for each of the\nfive communities that had 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century records available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u00dcsk\u00fcdar vol. 9, recorded 1534-1536 (<em>\u0130stanbul kad\u0131 sicilleri \u00dcsk\u00fcdar Mahkemesi 9\nnumaral\u0131 sicil<\/em>)<\/li><li>Balat vol. 2, recorded 1563 (<em>\u0130stanbul kad\u0131 sicilleri Balat Mahkemesi 2\nnumaral\u0131 sicil<\/em>)<\/li><li>Galata vol. 5, recorded 1575-1576 (<em>\u0130stanbul kad\u0131 sicilleri Galata Mahkemesi 5\nnumaral\u0131 sicil<\/em>)<\/li><li>Ey\u00fcb vol. 3, recorded 1585-1587 (<em>\u0130stanbul kad\u0131 sicilleri Ey\u00fcb [Hav\u00e2ss-\u0131\nRef\u00eea] Mahkemesi 3 numaral\u0131 sicil<\/em>)<\/li><li>Rumeli vol. 21, recorded 1594-1595 (<em>\u0130stanbul kad\u0131 sicilleri Rumeli Sad\u00e2reti\nMahkemesi 21 numaral\u0131 sicil<\/em>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For Balat, Ey\u00fcb, and Rumeli, the\nvolume I chose was the only 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century volume available. For\n\u00dcsk\u00fcdar and Galata, my choice was random. I\u2019ve since done garment research\nusing other \u00dcsk\u00fcdar and Galata volumes, and am satisfied that the volumes I\nchose for this study are representative of the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t possible to include Istanbul proper because the earliest volume dated to 1618, within the gray period for the SCA but not as solidly 16th century as I would like.
