The records I used were transcribed from the Ottoman Turkish alphabet into the modern Turkish alphabet, turned into PDFs, and placed online by ISAM, the Istanbul Kadi Registers Project (www.kadisicilleri.org), which focuses on records from the greater Istanbul area. All of the communities represented were in the immediate vicinity of 16th-century Istanbul, so close that they have since been absorbed into the modern city of Istanbul.

I chose one volume for each of the five communities that had 16th-century records available:

  • Üsküdar vol. 9, recorded 1534-1536 (İstanbul kadı sicilleri Üsküdar Mahkemesi 9 numaralı sicil)
  • Balat vol. 2, recorded 1563 (İstanbul kadı sicilleri Balat Mahkemesi 2 numaralı sicil)
  • Galata vol. 5, recorded 1575-1576 (İstanbul kadı sicilleri Galata Mahkemesi 5 numaralı sicil)
  • Eyüb vol. 3, recorded 1585-1587 (İstanbul kadı sicilleri Eyüb [Havâss-ı Refîa] Mahkemesi 3 numaralı sicil)
  • Rumeli vol. 21, recorded 1594-1595 (İstanbul kadı sicilleri Rumeli Sadâreti Mahkemesi 21 numaralı sicil)

For Balat, Eyüb, and Rumeli, the volume I chose was the only 16th-century volume available. For Üsküdar and Galata, my choice was random. I’ve since done garment research using other Üsküdar and Galata volumes, and am satisfied that the volumes I chose for this study are representative of the series.

It wasn’t possible to include Istanbul proper because the earliest volume dated to 1618, within the gray period for the SCA but not as solidly 16th century as I would like. I may analyze the Istanbul records separately at a later date.
